When the COVID-19 crisis hit, closing jobs and schools, Feeding America West Michigan quickly saw a ripple effect. As neighbors who had never before needed food assistance found themselves facing empty cupboards, and those already facing hunger found it even more difficult to make ends meet, the need for our services grew exponentially. National Guard Comes Up Big
From March 16 through June, Feeding America West Michigan distributed an unprecedented amount of food — 8,956,560 pounds to be exact. This food — equivalent to nearly 7.5 million meals — wouldn’t have made it to the hands of our neighbors facing hunger if it weren’t for the support of 17 Michigan National Guard members who dedicated 2 1/2 months of their time to the cause. Katie is a 24-year-old Saranac resident who lost her job at a bookstore due to the pandemic. She lives with her mother and younger sister who also work in retail. Getting and Giving Back
When Andy lost his real estate job because of COVID-19, he and his wife Stephanie were worried about how they would put food on the table. They needed to ensure their three teenage sons had enough to eat, so they attended a Mobile Food Pantry.
