September is Hunger Action Month (HAM). This year, Feeding America West Michigan has a wide range of activities planned. We are looking to start a committee of young adults passionate about solving hunger. We want to use this opportunity to educate people about hunger in West Michigan. In our region, 1 in 7 people are food insecure, meaning they do not have reliable access to healthy food. We will create a team with a diverse skillset and commitment to solving hunger.
We have a few events happening during HAM this year:
1) ArtPrize Exhibit. We are bringing Joel Sartore, a nationally-known photographer, speaker, author, and regular contributor to National Geographic magazine, to create a unique exhibit showcasing hunger. The exhibit will encompass the following five topics: Hope, Change, Compassion, Community, and Resiliency. We will need volunteers at the exhibit to talk about hunger in West Michigan and how to help.
2) Donor Cultivation Event. We will be having an event for our donors to talk with Joel and have a preview of the art before the ArtPrize exhibit opens.
3) Engaging Schools. We are starting a collaboration with a high school. A football game in September will focus on bringing awareness to hunger. Prior to the game, we will be going to the school to talk about hunger and providing the students with opportunities to engage the issue.
The committee will be involved with all facets of HAM, including
o Events aimed at current Feeding America West Michigan supporters and newcomers to the organization
o Marketing plan for events
o Budget for events
o Designing HAM premiums
Executing during HAM
o Staffing our ArtPrize exhibit
o Attending and helping with the donor event
o Promoting Hunger Action Month on social media
o Attending school events
o Recruiting volunteers for events
Time Commitment: The committee will meet once a month from April to July, and twice in August. In September, the time commitment will increase in accordance with the events.
