1 in 8 people in the food bank’s service area struggle with hunger, but not everyone is aware of hunger’s impact on their neighbors. Food drives do more than stock Feeding America West Michigan’s shelves: They also raise awareness of hunger’s pervasiveness and mobilize community members to join the fight against hunger.
Before you jump in to host one, consider incorporating the following ideas to make the biggest impact:
- Combine your food drive with a fund drive
When a food drive donor spends $10 on non-perishable food at the grocery store, they provide roughly 5 meals. Feeding America West Michigan can use that same $10 to provide 40 healthful meals, including fresh produce, protein and dairy, for those facing hunger.
- Ask your food drive donors to utilize our list of most-needed items
Food donated by manufacturers or rescued from farms made up 99.5 percent of the 25.1 million pounds of food Feeding America West Michigan distributed in 2018. Your food drive makes the biggest impact when its focus is to share the food bank’s mission with participants, and when the items donated help us fill any gaps with the items we need most.
Where to take donations
