Food drives do more than stock Feeding America West Michigan’s shelves: They also raise awareness of hunger’s pervasiveness and mobilize community members to join the fight against hunger.
Before you jump in to host one, consider incorporating the following ideas to make the biggest impact:
- Collect funds in addition to food
As a food bank, we can stretch a dollar much further than if someone were to purchase food on their own. When a food drive donor spends $1 on non-perishable food at the grocery store, they can provide a few meals. Feeding America West Michigan can use that same $1 to provide 15 nourishing meals, including fresh produce, protein and dairy, for neighbors facing hunger. - Ask your food drive donors to utilize our list of most-needed items
Your food drive makes the biggest impact when its focus is to share the food bank’s mission with participants, and when the items donated help us fill any gaps with the items we need most.
